I can only say based on my firsthand experience.
It takes a level of sickness, hopelessness and disconnection from others to accomplish.
Suicide deeply affects the ones left behind, the survivors.
The one that takes their own life, or the one that had to deal with the only solution which is to end it… the one that thought that was the only possible or logical solution… that one is no longer suffering.
They just are “no more”. They are done.
That feeling of being done, shut down, at the end of your own line life line of reaching for and embracing death, is a dark and lonely yet eerily peaceful feeling. The ends of life and death connect for a final meeting. That’s the only connection that is happening because all other connections have disintegrated.
For the one that takes they’re own life, life is pointless and death is final. It’s the final statement that screams out loud in case you didn’t hear the other words when spoken. Or maybe they never were spoken.
I’ve been suicidal several times. One time, I heard a commercial on the radio that said to call this number if you feel like harming yourself. I called. That was my first experience with getting help.
Here is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 1 (800) 273-8255
Pick up the phone and call even if it’s the very last thing you decide to do.
Suicide is a raw and unnecessary consequence of those living quietly with a mental illness. You don’t have to keep hiding in silence.
